Roommate Smoking Problem Help?
I have told my roommate more than 100 times not to smoke in the house, because the landlord told us not to smoke. The landlord actually came down and spoke to me 2 times about the smoking, but the problem is my roommate is the one who smokes not me. I keep telling that idiot, not to smoke in house, and i keep telling him to tell his friends not to do it. What should i do? I don’t want to be a rat, but i have asked them many times not to smoke in the house, it was in the leasing form when we signed it. Help!

Ever think of spraying an air freshener on them as they light up? Most of the sprays will become a flame thrower as they touch the flames, and the problems will be solved!
ME!

You need to talk to him properly & say its becoming a big problem for you aswell as the landlord, tell him if he wants to smoke he must go outside or dont smoke at all. He shouldnt of signed to it if he wasnt willing to stick to the rules. Let him know that you live there too & you dont want him to smoke.

I’d tell the landlord is your roommate and not you. Why get a bum rap for what someone else is doing. Besides, you could get evicted especially if its on the lease. I’d start looking for a new roomie.

You have to confront your friend about it as soon as possible. He should know that he’s not the only who lives in that house.
Talk to him as gentle as possible and be serious about it.

Since your landlord keeps reminding “you” remind him that you are not the one who smokes. Also ask the landlord to “show up” when your roommate is home-that way he can catch him in the act.

One day when he’s smoking in front of you, just get a small fire extinguisher and spray him down…. it’s going to start a fight but he’ll either learn his lesson or move out. Both ways you win I say.

when they light up, TELL them, not ask them, to take it outside because the landlord said he would evict you if you continued.

Put a tip of a matchstick or a little firecracker inside one of his cigarette. And as soon as he smokes it. He will learn his lesson in a hard way.

Its either getting kicked out in the streets or “ratting” out your friend.

Oh they comprehend it, they just don’t care. If I paid half your rent I’d do whatever I wanted to as well. Smoke up!

Do what you can to NOT be responsible for him. You spoken to him repeatedly, but he’s ignored you.
Stop making yourself crazy with the additional asking already. I highly doubt that the 101st time you say it that anything will be different as far as he’s concerned.
Also, the next time the landlord comes, tell him that you’ve been doing all you can to get him to stop without success. Then tell him to talk to your roommate, not YOU. Don’t let yourself get caught up in tihs.
The simple fact is that your roommate and his friends are jeopardizing YOUR housing and you certainly don’t want to have an eviction notice on your record–it could interfere with your getting housing down the road.
This is not at all about being a rat. It IS about your health, your housing, and not losing your share of any deposit you paid. It is also about his “disrespecting the house”.
Since this has been going on so long and he is constantly disrespecting you AND the landlord, I think that the important thing to do is to get financially prepared:
–You save as much money as you can so you can be prepared when, and if, you get evicted. The landlord doesn’t just have to evict only him; he can get rid of ANYbody who lives at your address, including you. Doesn’t matter if you’re innocent or not.
–Consider going to your landlord and having a talk about the situation and to *request* that your roommate be evicted.
Let him know that you’ve been trying to remedy the situation to his satisfaction and in accordance with the lease without success. Ask him to evict the nimcompoop already.
–If the landlord evicts him and lets you stay, then you still need to save to cover the rent until you find a more responsible roommate.
Unless the landlord talks, your roommate doesn’t need to know that you did this.
Good luck.
