Most people don’t realize the true importance of house chores before they first step into college. But dormitory rooms are limited and living with an annoying roommate can turn your college life into a ringside view of what hell could be like, and most people can’t stand cafeteria food for too long, either.

Sharing a flat with a few friends be a very fun and rewarding experience. With all the stresses of college life, knowing that you can go home to a place with people you get along with and who know you quite well is a great relief. And, of course, the burdens of keeping the place clean, paying for the rent and bills, and even keeping everyone fed can be divided between everyone living under the same roof.

When deciding to share a flat with your friends, make sure that you are familiar with the way they all live and conduct themselves in their own rooms. If your preferences are different you might find it difficult living with them. Contributions and sharing in the contributions should also extend to everything in the common areas. For example, no one friend should furnish the living room with all the furniture. Everyone has to contribute. Two people can pitch in for the sofa, another can provide for the chairs in the dining room, and so on. And while the person who contributed the items still has ownership of them, everyone should share. That means nobody should be a TV hog just because they own the TV.

Essentially, the shared flat can become a second home for everyone living in it. During exams, everyone can gather around for study sessions. You can invite friends over on big football game nights with not too much homework and no exams. You can even have a small party. And that’s the best part of sharing a flat through college, you have a measure of freedom.

Best of all, if you actually find a job in the same city after college, you can still stay at the same flat after college until you decide to live on your own. Some people may come and go, but at least you’ll still have a fantastic time with people who share your interests and your friendship!

Home sharing or rather flat sharing is something I would have never considered until I was at a financially challenging situation. But even then, I had my doubts. I was not sure I would be willing to give up the privacy of my home with someone I barely know, who most probably would respond to my advertisement on the local paper or through the net. But because of the difficulty of my finances, I had to greatly consider it.
Like any other first time flat sharers, I had my doubts and apprehension regarding the whole set up. I was not practically an extrovert type of person. You might also want to cut back on cleaning the house for a bit. Your roommate does not have a boy or a cleaning lady in you, so he or she would have to pick up after himself or herself. Another thing that you could do is to talk to him or her, and this would be the hardest to do, because you are going to have to be very honest with him or her. You would have to tell him or her what you really think and feel and start from that.
