In Present Time

March 15th, 2010 -- Posted in Flatmates Sharing | No Comments »

This blog has been getting neglected and the reason is that it’s getting harder and harder for me to write in it. Originally I began it so that I could write about my experience being homeless. And not that I’ve forgotten the horrors of that time, I still find it hard to even think about.

In present time I’ve been in my own apartment for a little over 2 years. And it’s been a rough road indeed. Because of this awful economy. It’s become more and more difficult and also in other ways easier. Easier because I now have a network of people and friends that I didn’t have before. And easier because it seems that the longer I’ve been able to pay my rent month after month, year after year, without being late even once, the more confidence I have about never allowing that to happen to me again.

I stayed at the WISE Place hotel and shelter for women. And after that I moved to Bethany, which is a convent. I cannot say enough about those two shelters. I was more than lucky to have found them both. It was, without a doubt, a huge blessing for me to be able to live in these places during this time. I can definitely say that it was an emotional and trying time, for me.

Bethany and WISE Place are both very close by to my apartment. And because I am “alumni” in both places, there are perks that I have. One of the blessings that I take advantage of on a regular basis is the Sunday morning breakfasts at the convent. It isn’t gourmet but it’s a free meal and very good company to be around. And yes, there are nuns there, lots of them.

I lived at Bethany for 5 months. And while it wasn’t like WISE Place, it has it’s subtle niceties. One detail that I miss after living there is the total serenity and peaceful environment I had while there. Compared to where I live now, it was a heaven for sure. Oh not that I don’t still love having my apartment, I do, I just miss the quietness of Bethany.

Another wonderful perk is that they have a scholarship program there at Bethany. I get my books and fees for school paid for. I only have to give sister Louise a receipt. And I hear that there is a math tutor, something that I may take advantage of soon. I’m still struggling to get through school, yes I am. But I am not going at it full time as I used to do. For me, not working and just being in college was a mistake. And I think it was one of the reasons that I ended up homeless.

And there are the Saturday night “graduate” dinners for all of us women who lived there and moved on from Bethany. It’s usually Chinese. And Bernie (who I am very good friends with now) is a staff member for many years, she is the Graduate Coordinator and buys the dinners for us. Bernie is loved by many. Everyone is dying to be around Bernie. She used to be a nun herself, but left the order before taking her vows.

Sister Louise is the head of the Bethany program. She’s not the sister Superior, (I met her too though), but she is definitely and important person in the Sisters of Saint Josephs community. Oh yah, I forgot to add that since I am a Bethany graduate I am now part of their community. There are many nuns living there, I think I heard there are around 200. Most of them are retired. A lot of them were missionaries in Papau New Guinea. Many of them lived in New Guinea and worked as teachers and nurses. And I think some other kinds of careers while there. They were there for 20 years. And some have some stories to tell.

All of these people and loving and supportive women took my mind off of the fear and the lowly opinion that I had of myself after becoming homeless. The experiences I had at WISE Place and Bethany took the stigma away from me I believe. I have more self respect and self esteem that I ever had in my life. You’d think that all of that college would have given me some, but it didn’t. Nevertheless I am still not finished with my personal journey.

How To Stop My Roommate From Snoring?

March 1st, 2010 -- Posted in Flatmates Sharing | 2 Comments »

My roommate snores, and it’s very annoying. Her snoring isn’t always regular either, sometimes it get’s VERY loud all of a sudden like a “CAH” sound, as if she’s hacking something up or gasping for air. (I asked her if she had sleep apnea, but she doesn’t know.) Are there any remedies or products that can help her snoring? Do those snore sprays or mouth washes work? I don’t think the nasal strips would work because she said she doesn’t breathe through her nose. (I think she consciously can, but not when she’s asleep.) For a while I made her sleep with an extra pillow to keep her head higher, and it worked a little.
Help! It bothers me so much I want to throw things at her!

What Do You Think Of My Roommate?

March 1st, 2010 -- Posted in Flatmates Sharing | 5 Comments »

I have a roommate that I find to be annoying. He only speaks about the fact that he is in a fraternity. He always has something negative to tell me even if it does not bother him. Even though I felt I have cut back and is losing weight he tells me I eat too much and I think its because of the fact he does not eat much and cant eat certain things because it would affect his skin. He also told me on couple occasions that all I do is eat and sleep even though me and my other college roommate works out 2-3 hours a day while he sits home and watch tv all day from 5 p.m. – 12 p.m.
